3 wins from 4 for the Senior A side

Ely had an early start in tournament 2 of the Eastern Counties Seniors 2nd Division.

Ely were not drawn in the first tournament so this was their first outing of the season and they started with a tricky early morning tie v Colchester.  They started brightly but went behind against the run of play. The team responded well however and soon equalised. Colchester are an experienced team and Elys youngster player were finding it hard to break down the defence. However they kept looking for the counter attack and rewarded with 3 more goals to win 4 – 1 (Max Dunand 2, Dan Salisbury and James Cox)

Game 2 was against Plymouth who with no local clubs make the long trip to the East. Again Ely started brightly but gave a couple of the skilful Plymouth players too much space and 2 slap shots left Ely 2 – 0 down. They responded well and Dunand and Salisbury caused all sorts of problems with their speed. With the defence tightened Ely pulled back level and extended into a 5 – 2 lead with Salisbury getting a hat trick and 2 from Dunand. Plymouth pulled one back but the score ended 5 – 3.

Game 3 against Norwich the early league leaders was a a tough game made worse by Ely going 2 behind. A direct by Sam Arnold  brought the scores back to 2 – 1 but Ely failed to convert any more chance with Norwich’s young goalie having a great game. As Ely pushed for the game they took chances in defence which Norwich exploited with the score ending  5 – 1.

In the final game against Letchworth Ely controlled the game from the start and whilst the post saved the opposition several times Ely pulled out a 3 – 0 lead. They then dropped the pace a little and allowed a tiring Letchworth team to ‘pinch’ 2 goals. However Ely scored again and whilst Letchworth were always threatening Ely eventually won  5  - 3 (Cox 2, Salisbury , Michael Hart and Hannah Barrow)

In what appears to be a very tight league Norwich maintained their top position ahead of Colchester with Ely level with Whittlesey but with games in hand over the top 2.
